People love money, and you're no exception. That's why I have written this article to help you in choosing good business names for your company or business.
You must consider these three basic things when choosing an effective business name:
1. You must be original and creative
2. You must look through the eyes of your audience
3. You must be memorable
Sounds easy right? It is. You just need to put your mind to it. Brainstorm alone and with friends. Your name is extremely important to your business. Do not blow through the naming process!
1. ORIGINALITY & CREATIVITY: EVERYONE'S GOT SOME!
That's right. Every one has a creative mind. Some may be more familiar with it than others, but it's there. The key to this step is simplicity. Here is where you take a concept and break it down to its simplest form. Remember, cleverness sells!
I will use my own site name and others as examples throughout this article.
RottenToons.com. Simple. Catchy. To the point. Why not EvilToons.com? ScaryToons.com? RottenCartoons.com? Here's why. RottenToons as a phrase contains two harsh "T" sounds in it: Rah-Tin-Toons. This alliteration allows for a sense of fluency upon pronunciation of the name. Next, the word rotten implies a few things: evil/naughty, grotesque, and offensive. These are very distinct and descriptive adjectives. At least one of these will come to mind to the average viewer upon coming to my site or more importantly seeing it in search engines. I have now tackled two key concepts in choosing a great business name for my site. To top it off, I created a unique cartoon logo for myself including a themed design with a play on words (guitar playing tunes!). Don't worry about the logo right now, I've got you covered with that once you come up with a good business name.
Let's look at Target Corporation as another example. The word "target" tells us one thing: THIS IS WHERE WE NEED TO GO! In darts the player is always aiming for the target. Wait a second, this applied to EVERY SPORT AND EVERY GOAL! People always have targets when setting goals, shooting hoops, or grabbing a great meal to eat. What a great name! Such a simple name has an extremely powerful subconscious message. On top of that, they made their symbol a target colored red, a highly attractive color. You're starting to see how important it is to choose a good business name? Great! Read on to create your own impressive business name.
2. LOOK THROUGH THE EYES OF YOUR AUDIENCE
You know who your audience is right? If not, take a step back and figure that out. Once you know your target audience, you can pretend that you are in their shoes. You need to make sure your good business name brings people to you. Although I design cartoons for all types of moods and styles, my specialty is evil cartoons. Therefore, the word "rotten" will attract those who are looking for skull cartoons, devil cartoons, evil pictures, etc. Someone who wants a skull cartoon or evil cartoon logo design is more likely to choose me over someone who designs all types of cartoons. When choose your business name, make sure it is something that your target audience will relate to.
3. YOUR GOOD BUSINESS NAME MUST BE MEMORABLE!
Let's say you own a car dealership. Your last name is Chezaratooy. You make a sale. Your customer loves your service, but your business name is "Chezaratooy Services". Odds are your customer will not be able to pronounce or even remember your name to tell a friend. Word of mouth is the most effective method of advertising, so you want a memorable business name.
To make your name easy to remember keep it distinct, simple, and to the point. You may also want to use the name of your product or service in your business name. For example, Rotten Toons is easy to remember, easy to spell, and incorporates my service in the name.
